One-Day Tour to Samshvilde

Sun, Jul 5 · 09:00 Tbilisi

Join us for a one-day tour to Samshvilde — one of Georgia's most impressive yet underrated historical monuments.

Together with archaeologist Alexander Avetikov and biologist Alexey Sivukhin, we will explore the ancient city nestled among the deep canyons of the Khrami and Chivchavi rivers.

On the way, we'll stop at Didgori — the site of the famous 1121 battle where King David the Builder's forces defeated the Seljuks. We'll discuss how historical myths become part of national memory, examine an unusual memorial, and enjoy panoramic views of the Trialeti Highlands.

Next, we'll visit the Manglisi Zion church, discuss the history of early Christianity in the Caucasus, and explore the features of Georgian church architecture.

Biologist Alexey Sivukhin will show Samshvilde from a different perspective — as a unique natural area. We'll talk about the flora and fauna of the canyons, the steppe and rocky ecosystems of the South Caucasus, and see how human history is inseparable from the history of nature.

This journey offers a chance to see one place from three perspectives: history, archaeology, and biology.
