Walk through 2,000 years at Gonio-Apsaros Fortress
Gonio-Apsaros is not a decorative ruin but a former Roman fortress on an important coastal road. Its complete wall circuit survives, along with traces of baths and barracks, and a small archaeological exhibition. Allow 1–1.5 hours for an unhurried visit.
From Batumi, take a bus or marshrutka toward Gonio, Kvariati, or Sarpi and ask for “Gonios tsikhe.” The ride from the centre takes about 25–40 minutes; a taxi works well for a group. After the fortress, continue on the same route to Gonio or Kvariati beach. For the return, the stop toward Batumi is on the opposite side of the highway.
