Travel to Chachersk for its unusual town hall
Central Chachersk was planned in the late eighteenth century as a formal urban ensemble. Its focal point is a five-towered town hall unlike the more familiar town halls of Belarus. The building now houses a history and ethnography museum with archaeology, icons, early printed books and a gallery devoted to the Chernyshev family.
After the museum, walk to the Transfiguration Church. Its circular plan formed part of the town’s symmetrical composition and helps explain why Chachersk is best understood as a complete architectural idea rather than a collection of unrelated monuments. Two to three hours is enough for the centre and museum; allow the rest of the day for travel and an unhurried walk.
Getting there from Homyel: direct buses and minibuses leave the main bus station and usually take 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. The town hall is a 10–15 minute walk from Chachersk bus station. Driving is about 65–70 km and roughly one hour. Confirm museum hours and the return service on the day, especially at weekends and on public holidays.
