See Homyel’s Old Believer Church of St Elijah

Ильинская старообрядческая церковь

St Elijah’s is the oldest surviving Old Believer church in Belarus and a rare example of late-eighteenth-century wooden architecture. It stands in the former Spasova Sloboda rather than on a ceremonial square, so the walk here reveals a less familiar layer of Homyel’s history.

Circle the building first to appreciate its log construction, linked volumes and small bell structure. This is an active place of worship: enter only when it is open to visitors, avoid disturbing services and follow local customs. Allow 30–60 minutes including a short walk around the old neighbourhood.

Cost: viewing the exterior and visiting the active church are free.
Tickets: no separate ticket is required. Donations are voluntary and have no fixed amount.
