Visit the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

Церковь Вознесения Девы Марии

The church was built from 1878 to 1883 after the Catholic community finally received permission for a new place of worship. The authorities required it not to rise above neighbouring buildings, so the design omitted towers and instead emphasised a broad facade with a pediment, pilasters and a tall arched entrance.

The building survived wartime damage, closure and use as a cultural centre before being returned to the parish and restored in the 1990s. Study its restrained Neoclassical proportions outside and enter only when this will not disturb Mass or parish life.
