Lecture: Archaeological Monuments
Lecture: Archaeological Monuments. Types, locations, and features.
Lecturer: Pavel Kolosnitsyn
What exactly is called an archaeological monument? Is it only the ruins of an ancient city or a beautiful mound visible from afar?
In fact, archaeological monuments can look very different: from a cave or ancient hearth to a huge city, from a burial ground to a sunken ship. Sometimes the monument is visible on the surface, and sometimes the archaeologist literally has to dig it out from underground.
In this lecture, we will explore the different types of archaeological monuments, where to find them, and how they are identified. We will look at real examples and learn what even a seemingly ordinary hill or patch of earth can reveal about the past.
Most importantly, we will try to see the familiar landscape through the eyes of an archaeologist: what we see around us today and what traces of the past lie hidden beneath our feet.
