Betkil: Svaneti’s Hunter’s Tale
Mestia Culture and Art Center stages the one-act mime drama “Betkil,” inspired by Eva Margiani’s play and directed by Kakha Bakuradze. This deeply rooted Svan legend tells the story of Betkil, a remarkable young hunter born into a family of skilled woodsmen. As Betkil proves himself in the wilds, he wins the heart of Tamari, whose father honors him with a bow and arrow—a gift that shapes his fate. On his next hunt, Betkil is lured into the mystical domain of Dali, the goddess of hunting. Entranced by Dali, Betkil is doomed to never truly return home, his story echoing through Svan folklore as a symbol of love, longing, and destiny. The production blends modern theater, expressive movement, and shadow play, making it engaging and accessible to all audiences. Music is by Sandro Nikoladze; the cast features Data Filpan, Gegi Paliani, Mariam Naveriani, Salome Japaridze, Nana Kakhiani, Mariam Mchedliani, Bakar Paliani, and others. Originally staged in 2020, “Betkil” breathes new life into ancient mythology. Performance duration is 50 minutes. Location: 3 Benqu Khergiani Street, Mestia. Each ticket comes with a complimentary glass of wine.
